  • How to Provide Financial Support for a Grandchild - Not simple! Register Here

Most grandparents want to provide for the well-being of grandchildren. There are some smart ways of doing this and there are some approaches that are patently unwise.

Grandparents can pay the cost of tuition or medical bills for grandchildren. These are perhaps the easiest ways to provide financial support. For those with large estates, this is also tax-wise.

Grandparents can also use the “annual exclusion,” which lets each grandparent give up to $16,000 per year to any individual, including a grandchild. When the grandchild is a minor, there are two approaches that can be taken. The better by far is the Crummey Trust. The other is the Uniform Transfer to Minors Act (UTMA).

Learn about the many protective benefits of utilizing a Crummey Trust. Learn about the pitfalls of UTMA accounts.
